James was born on 18 NOV 1790 in Lochanhill, Maybole, the son of John McCreath and Agnes Lochead.

His wife was Margaret Craig, who he married on 5 OCT 1816 in Paisley. Their eight known children were Joh (1817-1869), Margaret (1818-<1823), Mary (1822-?), Margaret (1823-1906), Marion (1826-<1828), Marion (1828-?), Anne (1833-?) and Jame (1835-1919).
