He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Margaret Jane Swinton, who he married on 2 MAR 1876 in Walmer Crescent, Glasgow. Their seven known children were Charlott (1871-1896), Robert (1877-1878), Maggie Nixo (1879-1938), Jemima Swinto (1881-1908), David (?-?), Agnes Simpson Manner (1883-1949) and William Joh (1885-?).
His second wife was Jeannie Brown Carswell, who he married on 30 DEC 1890 in Brisbane. They had no known children.
