Peter was born in 1943 in Halifax, the son of Peter Leith McCreath and Harriette Cary Shatford.
He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Patricia Ann Gordon. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their two known children were Jefferson Gordon (1973-?) and Adam Peter Barton (1976-?).
His second wife was Judith Elizabeth Duncan, who he married in 1982 in Nova Scotia. They had no known children.
