Thomas was born in 1855 in Johnstone, Renfrew, the son of John McCreath and Elizabeth Walker.
His wife was Annie Mary Kidwell. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their five known children were John Valentine (1886-1980), Robert Vernon (1887-1983), Thomas (Tom) (1889-1916), William Vernon (1895-?) and Ronald Walker (1902-?).
